LYNETTE

“I need your help. Excuse me, please.”

I work my mouth at Gaia, butting in on my hustle.

“They already know you guys are the real item,” she snaps, waving her hand.

“She isn’t lying. I like what you two are saying,” agrees Brenda, a owner of many stores. “I think this is what we’ve been missing. Now, the products…are you equipt to handle wholesale?”

“Fuck that; I’m more interested in what they are gonna do for me,” interjects the balding Arab.

“You’ve done themed nights before. It’s nothing new.”

I grind my teeth at the nasty bitch that seems to have nothing to offer but her face but is going all out to block our drip.

“Theme nights are over done,” states Gerald. “So, the trick is to offer what others aren’t.”

I like Gerald’s style. He feeds well off of our energy. Calm, he doesn’t let on his desire to make something happen with this man. To be honest, I can give two shits about the theme shit. While I like a night out, my clubbing days went out with my hoe phase. The only reason why I joined the conversation was to keep him from losing out. His attempts to get the man to listen to him were turning cold. The guy was too busy putting his two cents in my and Olive’s conversation with the shop owner to even give note to Gerald’s hustle.

“Okay, so how would you do it?”

I exchange glances with Gerald and Olive. Why the hell is he asking me. Licking my lips, I do what I do best; pull shit out of my ass.

“Look, you need to make coming to your place fun. Yeah, people want to be seen and get fucked face and fucked, if they are lucky. So, give them something different. Have you ever done a Korean night? No, scratch that,” I say a second later. “Do an Asian night. People come dressed in Korean high fashion…even Anime, which you’ll be surprised many people are into. On the screens, you can show fighting and sex clips from anime too. For entertainment, fly in top Korean rappers and DJs here and from over there. Focus on the culture…bring in their money. You can do the same if you don’t already with your own culture. The thing is that we, the black community love, LOVE celebrating other cultures. We eat up dressing up, the music, the food. Getting celebrities to show up would be easy because it’s different from the normal post up in the VIP and bottle service,” I explain.

“Oh, and the whole place can be decorated,” adds Olive.

“How about turning your place into a skating rank? No, hear me out. Skating is huge. What if you did that but date it from the 80s. People gotta come out dressed right.”

“We can play old-school music,” Gerald adds.

“With a Soul Train line, dance-offs…oh, that would be fun,” laughs Olive.

Rubbing on his thick beard, I can see the wheels in the man’s head churning.

“I don’t think that would make a difference.
